How do I add a customer?

Add a customer from the Customers tab with their name, a phone or email, and their address.

Open Customers and choose Add Customer. Fill in the form and choose Create Customer. You do not need to be verified to add customers.

What the form needs

On the Customers tab the form requires:

  • First name and last name.
  • An email or a phone number (at least one).
  • An address.

Property type (Residential or Commercial) and Internal Notes are optional. Internal notes are private and never shown to the customer.

The form you open from Create in the sidebar (Add Customer/Lead) asks for less: a first name, plus a phone number or a complete address.

If you have neither a phone number nor an email, choose Add Lead instead; a lead needs only a first name.

Enter the address

Start typing in the address box and pick a full street address from the suggestions. If you cannot find it, choose Enter Address Manually and fill in the street, city, state and ZIP. If Lawnly cannot find the address on the map, it says so and asks you to check the street name, city and ZIP, or to save it anyway and set the location on the map.

Text messages

When you type a phone number, a tile appears: "Opt this customer in to text messages?" Tick it only if the customer has agreed to get texts from your business. A customer who has opted out cannot be switched back on from here; they have to opt back in themselves. See Texting customers.

If the email is already in use

Each email belongs to one customer in your business. If you enter one that already exists, you see "Email already in use." with a link to View existing customer profile.

Other ways to add customers

  • Create in the sidebar, then Add Customer/Lead.
  • The Upload tab, to import a list. See Import your customer list.
  • When you create a job, Create New Customer adds them in the same window.

Cards on file

Adding a customer does not collect a card. You can ask for one afterwards, once your business is verified. See Get a customer's card on file.
