How do I charge a customer's card on file?
Charge the full balance or part of it to a card the customer has saved, from the invoice.
Open the invoice and choose the charge button, which shows the amount, for example Charge $58.46 now. Check the card and the amount in the window that opens, then confirm. The money is taken immediately. Only owners, admins and managers can charge a card, and your business must be verified.
Before you start
- The customer needs a card on file. The invoice shows it, for example "VISA ····2680". Without one, you send the invoice and request a card instead (see below).
- Your business must be verified to take payments. If it is not, Lawnly keeps the invoice as a draft and asks you to finish getting set up to be paid.
Charge the invoice
- Open Invoices and select the invoice. In the invoice form, the main button is also the charge button when the customer has a card on file, next to Send without charging.
- Choose the charge button. The window is titled with the customer and amount, for example "Charge Customer 20084608 $58.46?", and says "This takes the money immediately. It can't be undone, only refunded."
- Check the summary (services, sales tax, what the customer owes, the card processing fee and what you would receive) and the card. Choose Use a different card to pick another saved card.
- Leave Email the customer a receipt on if you want them to get one.
- Choose the Charge button with the amount.
Lawnly confirms it, for example "Charged $58.46", and the invoice is marked paid.
Charge part of the balance
In the charge window, choose Charge a different amount and enter the amount. A part charge must be at least $1.00, and you cannot charge more than the balance. The invoice then shows Partly paid with the amount left, and you can charge the rest later from the invoice.
If the card is declined
Nothing is charged and the window tells you why. Try another saved card, or ask the customer for a new one with Request new card on the invoice.
If there is no card on file
Choose Send & request card when you send the invoice, or Request new card on a sent invoice. The customer gets a link to add a card.
Charge automatically
Under Invoicing & payments on the Business tab, Charge cards automatically charges a saved card when a job is completed. Customers without a saved card get a payment link instead.
